Weekly Devotion for Sunday, February 15th

Hello Everyone! This is Meghan writing from an icy Camp Gray. This Sunday’s Gospel comes from Mark:

Mark 1:40-45

A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said,
“If you wish, you can make me clean.”
Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand,
touched him, and said to him,
“I do will it. Be made clean.”
The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.
Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once.
He said to him, “See that you tell no one anything,
but go, show yourself to the priest
and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed;
that will be proof for them.”
The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter.
He spread the report abroad
so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly.
He remained outside in deserted places,
and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

Back in Jesus’ time lepers were people who were excluded and shunned from the rest of the community.  They were seen as dirty and unclean because leprosy is a contagious disease which causes sores all over your body.  These people were considered disgusting so when Jesus healed the leper it was a great miracle.  Jesus tells the leper not to tell anyone and to just show himself to the Jewish high priests.  But the man was so happy and excited to be healed that he told everyone that Jesus healed him.

One thing that we can learn from this scripture passage is that it’s not always easy to listen to what Jesus tells us to do, like the leper that was healed.  It can be extremely difficult to follow what Jesus is calling us to do because his message may seem unclear to us, we might ignore what he wants us to do, or our hearts may not be truly open to his calling.

I encourage you to take time to pray each day and listen to what Jesus is calling you to do and try to carry out his will every day.

God Bless,
Meghan

If you’re like many of us here at Camp Gray, you probably have your radio dial set to Country Music.  If this is the case, you may have missed the Camp Gray interveiw on Madison’s Catholic Radio, Relevant Radio-which happens to be the best Catholic Radio Station east of the Mississippi.  Host Brian Kelly has a weekly radio show where he talks about the events, organizations, and people of the Diocese.  We have a short audio clip of the interview with our Co-Director, Jeff, and Assistant Director, Chris.  It was a fun experience, and Jeff and Chris are appreciative to Brian for helping to spread the word about Camp Gray.  Listen in as Jeff and Chris talk about life at Camp Gray:

We’ve seen a few flurries at camp in the last couple of weeks as you may have read about in earlier blog posts but real winter excitement comes in the form of waking up and looking out the window to a blanket of snow covering everything at camp.  Today marked just that.  We received about 3 inches of that beautiful white powder.  Just enough for a few staff members to pull out the skis or get excited about snowball fights and snowshoe adventures.  The photo below is a glimpse of the winter commute heading into the camp office.  Bring on the snow!

Hi there!  This is Amy, and I recently returned from my home state of Minnesota.  When I left there was about an inch of snow on the ground and trees.  It was gorgeous.  The weather seems to have followed me, but instead of snow, we have rain here.

I love this time of year, the transistioning from fall to winter.  Along with the season lots of interesting things are going on around camp.  Some things happen naturally, like the last maple leaves falling and kids coming to camp bringing winter coats instead of hoodies.  Other things aren’t so natural.  Within the last few weeks I’ve noticed many of the picnic tables being tipped up.  I was wondering if it was just done as a prank, like cow tipping, or if it was intentional.  I still haven’t figured it out. Howdy friends!

Let’s talk winter.  As many of you know, I hail from the Cowboy State, Oklahoma!  Oklahoma has been known to have some pretty crazy winters, but nothing compares to the cold up here.  A good 3 inch blanket of snow in the OK state would have our schools shut down for days.  Even though the impending winter will be my second Wisconsin winter, part of me can’t help but feel a wee bit nervous for the extreme conditions y’all have in these parts.  Another reason for concern is that most are predicting that this winter will actually be colder and snowier than last years record breaking winter.

What’s one to do in preparation for extreme cold and snow?  Should I stock up on hot cocoa and blankets?  Should I buy a couple extra pairs of long johns and some of those hot pad things that people put in their shoes?  Should I ask Tom, our maintenance man, to build me a fire place?  (more…)

Last Friday a group of summer staff and year round staff went to Pewaukee to see Matt Maher in concert.  The concert was at Queen of Apostles parish and it was free!  For those of you who don’t know, during the summer of 2007 we used Mr. Maher’s song, Welcome to Life as our theme.  It is a great song, touching on many different aspects of our faith.  We even have high school retreats here during the year that we call Welcome to Life retreats.  Since then many of our staff have become even more interested in Matt Maher’s music.  (more…)
